| Lessons 1-36
below correspond to the vocabulary words used in the ReadingKEY Grade 5 Vocabulary List and provide you with important worksheets to assist in
reaching mastery of the 700 new reading words designated as "priority
reading vocabulary" for 5th Grade students. Each lesson covers 20 new
vocabulary words and typically requires 1 week for complete mastery with
10-11 year old students. Students working in a "one-on-one"
situation with a tutor or parent can advance at considerably faster rate. Words have been arranged from "Most Common"
to "Least Common" as seen in common textbooks along important
vowel sounds and reading rules. To further solidify memorization of
the vocabulary words, worksheets incorporate several strategies which
greatly increase the efficiency of the word learning (memorization)
process.
These include - "Examples" - "Definition Matching" and "Sentence
Writing." By providing "Examples" of situations associated
with the vocabulary word, students have a visual, "real-life" circumstance
to facilitate understanding. |
The "Examples" section also provides an excellent format for motivating
discussion between the class and teacher. There are 4 worksheets per
week which give a total of 144 worksheets for the entire Grade 5 school
year. The Friday Test can be given to test vocabulary mastery and is
recommended to be part of the student's final nine-weeks reading grade.
IMPORTANT:
Our research has shown that the majority of 5th Grade students have not
yet mastered definitions and proper usage of the majority of our Grade
4 Vocabulary words. Use Lesson 1 below to determine if your students
are, in fact, ready to begin the Grade 5 words. Unless your school
has been using ReadingKEY for several years, most Grade 5 teachers should
begin the school year somewhere around the middle of our Grade 4 Program.
